Health, Safety and Environment Officer

About the role

This hands on role is responsible for providing leadership, advice and governance across PMB’s health, safety, wellbeing and environmental management systems. The role will be key in ensuring legislative compliance, reducing workplace risks, supporting employee psychosocial wellbeing initiatives and driving a positive safety culture throughout the organisation. Working closely with leaders, employees, contractors and Health and Safety Representatives, the role will influence day to day operations while also supporting long term continuous improvement initiatives. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and supporting workplace health, safety and environmental compliance activities.
  • Facilitating risk assessments for new plant, equipment, processes and workplace changes.
  • Supporting management of hazardous substances, dangerous goods, lead exposure controls and PPE programs.
  • Managing workplace incident reporting, investigations, corrective actions and trend analysis.
  • Partnering with leaders and employees to strengthen consultation, engagement and safety culture initiatives.
  • Supporting the identification and management of psychosocial hazards and employee wellbeing programs.
  • Supporting the Return to Work process and occupational health monitoring requirements, including lead in blood testing programs.
  • Monitoring, analysing and reporting on HSE performance metrics and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Coordinating emergency preparedness activities, including testing emergency response procedures.
  • Coordinating environmental compliance activities including waste management, sustainability programs, pollution prevention requirements and regulatory reporting obligations.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, skills and experience: 

  • Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, Environmental Management or an equivalent qualification.
  • ICAM or equivalent incident investigation training.
  • Minimum 5 years HSE experience, ideally within a manufacturing, industrial or high-risk operational environment.
  • Strong understanding of Work Health and Safety and environmental legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations and implementing corrective actions.
  • Excellent communication, consultation and influencing skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic safety management systems
  • Internal auditor qualifications in WHS, environmental or integrated management systems (desirable)
  • Experience with hazardous substances, occupational hygiene controls or lead risk management (desirable)
  • Training in psychosocial risk management, mental health first aid or workplace wellbeing programs (desirable)

Prerequisites

  • Be eligible to successfully obtain and maintain a NV1 Australian Defence Security Clearance (must be an Australian Citizen)
  • Hold a current driver’s licence.
  • Ability to obtain a current police clearance.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment medical and Drug & Alcohol screen.
  • Ability to travel occasionally interstate and overseas for work and training purposes.
  • Undertake six monthly lead in blood testing
